The Myanmar Project: Streets of protest (10)

Since the military coup on Feb 1st, hundreds of thousands of people have taken the streets to express their anger at the electoral steal and their wish of a federal democracy governed by civilians. These pictures are the fieldwork of recent graduates in journalism who are now covering the protests from all around the country. In the tenth series, repression in Yangon & commemoration in Monywa.

    09/03 - Kyauk Myaung, Yangon. Young guards equipped with makeshift and cheap protective gear volunteer to protect on the frontline the protesters taking part in the Civil Disobedience Movement. Police and army violently broke every demonstration since the end of February in the main city but people keep on taking the streets every day throughout the country. More than 70 people have been killed in Myanmar and more than 2000 arrested since the coup.

    Kyal Sin 'Angel', a 19 yo frontline volunteer guard, was killed by police during a similar protest in Mandalay on March 3th, wearing a black T-shirt with the message: "Everything will be OK". Thousands of people came to her funeral as she became a symbol of state violence against young pro-democracy protestors.
