Shame on Grand Slams

The way the four Grand Slam treated Naomi Osaka tells much about how they consider mental health issues. They seem to be guided more by greed than by preoccupation for their athletes' health. At the very least their communication skills are weak if not their empathy.

When one tennis star announced she wanted to skip press conferences the four Grand Slam organisers got frightened and united to put maximum pressure on her. Naomi Osaka explained she tried to protect herself from unnecessary angst. Never-mind, they agreed, let us threaten her of exclusion of any Grand Slam event.

Their greed and lack of basic humane empathy immediately exposed by their complete disregard for athletes' health let alone well-being and their fear to lose some advertising money if more tennis-women and men refused to be put on the grill after their matches. They show money was the only thing they cared about.

Of course if she had broken her wrist on the court, she wouldn't have being fined then threatened of career annihilation - not being admitted to Grand Slam's Opens pretty much amounts to that - but the French Tennis Federation (and the others), seem to disregard mental health issue so much they were unable to reach to Ms Osaka and allow her to continue the tournament. Far worse, their finger pointed at her in a tweet as if their nasty press release wasn't enough... She did the only thing she could to protect herself and left the competition.

Strikingly enough, Roland Garros director flees before taking any question when reading the subsequent Gran Slam press release. Moreover all the gentlemen who so wrongly addressed Ms Osaka's difficulties are still in place. It seems to us that their resignation should be the only possible outcome for their  behaviour and greed.
