I want to address one issue. And it is about Israeli society. I started writing a series of posts to get to the point without ambiguity but I realised nobody would reach the actual subject of the long essay. So I decided to get directly to the question. here it is:
If the horrors reported by journalists in Israel and Gaza are true to a large extent, how can the Israeli society recover?
I acknowledge the obvious harm to the People of Gaza but I don't want it to be the subject of this article. The above question has to be understood as a logical statement: If A then B ; not claiming A is true. I also do not want to discuss whether a given report is accurate or a given fact is certain enough. Thus the "If". I am not making any claim regarding the veracity or importance of the horrors I will mention below. I do not want to be dragged into endless debates about reliability of sources and accuracy of numbers. The only question I want to ask is if these horrors were indeed committed by Israeli soldiers then what will the consequences be for the Israeli society. The conditionality is the only way I though of to be concise enough and still ask the question which I did not see addressed as such so far.
Hypothesis:
If
the mass bombing and killing of Palestinians civilians in Gaza are intentional;
the targeting of UN shelters is widespread;
the execution of civilians men is confirmed;
the Israeli snipers are shooting civilians;
the shooters are bloodthirsty and trigger happy enough to shoot their own fellow soldiers and citizen by mistake;
the ambulances are deliberate targets;
the deprivation of food, water, medicine is voluntary;
the torture of civilians prisoners systematic;
the protracted suffering of an entire People knowingly imposed...
consequences :
then
a huge proportion of Israelis are enforcing such terrible acts,
they are daily engaged in sadistic and degrading treatments of human beings,
they are torturing on an quasi industrial scale,
they know they are killing thousands of innocent children,
they know they are maiming thousands more,
they know their behaviour is unforgivable,
they have to know that they are committing war crimes on a daily basis,
they probably are conscious they are engaging in crimes against humanity...
So,
how can they live with themselves afterward?
how can they behave decently back home?
how can they show kindness in their civilian life, having been on the executing side of such abominations?
how can there be a return to a normal life for them?
And then
how can Israel deal with such a gilt?
how can the Israeli society survive this horrific culpability?
how would the horrors committed not creepingly consume every ounce of humanity and care at a national scale?
how could any society heal in less than generations - provided it can avoid to explode - ?
I realise that nations responsible for horrific treatment of others have not fared so badly afterwards.
I am aware of the apparent lack of overwhelming social trauma after committing genocides.
Germany, the USA, Türkiye and all colonialist states do not seem to have undergone social collapse after horrific treatment of other People.
That's bewildering in itself.
Will it be the same this time? Despite the important proportion of people directly involved, despite the proximity of the victims, despite the intended secrets bound to be exposed? I am at a loss imagine how it could be. I would take no comfort either ways. None seems to bear any hope in human nature.
