More than a million people have signed a petition demanding a second EU referendum as the UK continues to reel from the vote for a Brexit.
Signatories are calling for a new rule to be implemented stipulating that polls on the European Union with a majority under 60 per cent and turnout under 75 per cent must be re-started.
The petition started by William Oliver Healey, reads: “We the undersigned call upon HM Government to implement a rule that if the Remain or Leave vote is less than 60 per cent based a turnout less than 75 per cent there should be another referendum.”
- Brexit: Petition demanding change to EU referendum rules to force second vote passes 700,000 signatures
- 'Londependence' petition calls for London to join the EU on its own
- The pattern largely followed that of the strongest votes for Remain in Thursday’s referendum, which ended with a result of 48 per cent, to 52 per cent for Leave, on a turnout of 72 per cent.
Such was the petition’s popularity on Friday morning that it crashed the government’s website, and its popularity means that it must be considered for a Parliamentary debate.
It was unclear if such a rule, if created and inserted into UK legislation, could be applied retrospectively.
When a Remain vote was considered likely in May, Nigel Farage suggested he would support a second referendum if his side lost by a narrow margin.
The Ukip leader told the Mirror: “In a 52-48 referendum this would be unfinished business by a long way. If the Remain campaign win two-thirds to one-third that ends it.”
He made no mention of the sentiment on Friday, when he triumphantly hailed “independence day” for Britain.
After the Scottish independence referendum in 2014, the 45 per cent of voters who lost started a similar campaign for another vote, and could now get their wish after Nicola Sturgeon said there had been a “significant change” to the circumstances of the original poll.

They are doing this purely from a democratic perspective?
1. And they are fine with the unelected EU Elite ruling them? Erm... OK.
2. They would have been just as passionate if the vote had gone their way, right?

Referendum win over 50 % not "first past the post election"
Turnout 72% Result remain 48% leave 52% BUT
Result for 100% = did not vote 28% remain 35% leave 37%
Therefore leave does not have a majority for change
Farage said 52 48 vote "was unfinished business"
Additionally we should have another referendum on the final terms after "leaving" negotiations.

People who voted for leave should be signing this petition as well, after all the leave politicians are already back tracking on nearly every thing they said would happen/be possible if the UK left the EU.
But my guess is that they will not bother because they fully accept and even enjoy politicians lying to them.
If this government is insisting that for a strike to happen there has to be at least 75 % of the union members voting and of those 60% have to vote for a strike for it to legally take place then the same rule should apply to them.
Or perhaps leavers do not believe in democracy and fairness and are happy for 1 rule for them and another for politicians

I sometimes wonder about the logic behind democracy. Like why the old people get to vote o.O?!? They're not paying the taxes. Why the uneducated people get to vote, they don't have a mind of their own anyway on any of these issues, as they have no idea about big economy and politics. I'm really quite convinced that full on democracy is not good for us. Following that logic deeper, we'd be eating fecals, millions of flies can't be wrong. POWER TO THE FLIES! As we know from the middle ages crowd is not necessarily making the most logical, wise or sensible decisions. Which we know well, from "BURN THE WITCH!" ceremony.

Then how about this as a compromise: another referendum in 2 years time to see if this was really Project Fear or Project Fact? We could see how this whole thing has played out and whether the Leave Campaign was pie-in-the-sky or the new Albion. Then people would really know what both sides were offering rather than a series of threats or promises.
If the Leavers are so convinced about how Brexit is great in every conceivable way, this would surely be a rubber stamp formality.

It was in their manifesto which they were elected upon - a potential referendum should the situation change dramatically. Scotland's place in the EU was 'assured' if we voted No - which many did - look how truthful that proved to be. Ironically a promise made by he same man many Leaver's dislike too - Cameron

I'm english and I completely agree with the Scottish position. Why on earth, when they've overwhelming voted to remain in the EU, would the Scottish accept the outcome of the referendum? If I lived north of the border i'd be sick with having to stomach the decision of the english electorate (again). You deserve another referendum now that they've completely moved the goalposts.

Brexit lied - as we knew they would.

Despite the Imperialist nature of Brussels contradicting everything that the labour faux luvvies stood for, they still voted to remain. Judging from most of the comments, they voted to stay so as not to crash the economy. The faux luvvies are so up to the hilt paying for their iphones, macbooks, electric bikes, houseboats on the Thames, Spotify and Amazon prime subscriptions they they are petrified that any ripple in the economy with send them over the edge, and to hell with real working people. Bob Geldof personified. Perhaps they should ask, why the hell they are in such a fragile position ?
The EU and the bankers have put them in that position. There is a reason that a new VW golf or iphone for example is so artificially high to buy, yet the "easy" repayments are so artificially low; to trap you into their debt.
Switzerland, who isnt in the EU had a referendum 2 weeks ago where there was a proposal for a "basic income" where every Swiss citizen would recieve 1,750 euro a month for life, wether they work or not! A dream utopia you might say? Well the swiss voted 70% NO to it, because they havent been herded into the financial pig pen that everyone else has and they see their future bright enough without free money.
So don't be angry that brexit threatens your personal finances, be angry at the real forces behind your aprehension about your finances. You have been put in that position deliberately by the globalists, and you voted for more of it ? Like an addiction to painkillers.

It was downright nasty, which you've chosen to continue, unfortunately, in your comment.
I'm not gullible, nor uneducated, and I'm certainly not an aged rural. Or, in layman's terms, I am not a thick, unschooled, senile peasant.
I knew full well what I was voting for, and would do so again in a heartbeat.
But, if I had lost, I wouldn't be on here bleating about it and starting pointless referendums trying to unravel our democratic process. I'd be getting on with things, like an adult.
Our Prime Minister accepted the will of the people.
I don't doubt most of the Remain side has also. It's time the spoilt minority stopped stamping their feet.
