WE NEED TO NAME THE PROBLEM:

CAPITALISM

Why, when scientists have known the threat facing humanity and
all living beings for at least 30 years, have our rulers done next to nothing? Why, after the IPCC Reports of 2018 and 2021 are they still doing next to nothing? Why, after all the talk and all the commitments will COP 26 still not take the drastic action needed to stop catastrophic climate change?

Ecosocialists believe it is not just that they are old or stupid or uncaring. They may be all these things but the problem is they are committed to an economic system that makes tackling climate change close to impossible. That system is CAPITALISM. Capitalism means that across the world the vast bulk of production is organised for profit.

It means that corporations and states are competing on a world market which requires them to grow endlessly.

In this system looking after the environment, ensuring sustainability, caring for the future of humanity, nature and life on our planet are always sacrificed to the immediate pursuit of profit.

CAPITALISM, WHICH ALL OUR RULERS SUPPORT, IS DRIVING US INTO THE ABYSS

NAME THE SOLUTION:

ECOSOCIALISM

Yes, we need Green New Deals and Climate Jobs.

We need climate justice and massive aid and reparations to the Global South. We need free green public transport.

We need a halt to all fossil fuel exploration and extraction – Leave it in the ground! We need solidarity with indigenous peoples – an immediate end to all encroachment on their land and destruction of their habitats.

But to make all these things and many other necessary changes a reality we need urgent transition
to ECOSOCIALISM – to a system based on socially owned, democratically planned production for human need and environmental sustainability. And we need global mass action, real people power, to bring this about.

The Global Ecosocialist Network (GEN) is an association for the discussion
and dissemination of ecosocialist ideas with members on all five continents. For our principles see http://www. globalecosocialistnetwork.net/our- principles/. Our supporters include such well known ecosocialists as John Bellamy Foster (US), Sabrina Fernandes (Brazil), Michael Löwy (France), Susan Price (Australia), Bríd Smith (Ireland), Trevor Ngwane (South Africa), Ian Angus (Canada).
