Welcome to Newcomers!
Mediapart has launched today an English-language version of its on-line paper. Alongside this paper exists a Members' Club where subscribers can run blogs and participate in joint editions on any number of topics. Anybody can read these blogs, subscriber or not, but only subscribers can publish, comment and rate the posts and articles.
Today this Club is obviously mostly in French, but experience shows that many subscribers know English so if English-speaking subscribers want to participate there will be no shortage of commentators. A number of blogs - in French - are already run by non-french residents and expatriated french. This opens a refreshing window on the mostly franco-French atmosphere of the Club, but there is plenty of room for other viewspoints and experiences from around the world.
The Club is moderated a posteriori, that is there is no vetting when someone pubishes a blog or edition article but these may be put down later by the editorial team if they perceive them as being contrary to the Club charter of proper conduct. The same goes for commentaries that are deemed insulting. Bear in mind that French law is more restrictive of freedom of speech than British or US law.
The political atmosphere of the Club being, on the whole, somewhat left of centre on the French political spectrum it is obvious that publishing neocon or generally right-wing viewpoints will meet with some opposition (take this as an understatement). That is not to say there is here a general internal agreement on everything to do with politics, econiomic and social affaires - far from it in fact, which makes the whole experience quite interesting.
So, welcome to newcomers!
