BY14, a very special artistic and cultural encounter between artists from all over the world engaged in a variety of endeavours is to take place in the autumn in Yakutsk, (Sakha Republic) in the Yakutia region of tundra and taiga.
The event shall be hosted in a number of public places and national institutions such as the Fine Arts Museum, the Arctic State Institute of Art and Culture, the gallery of the M.K Ammossov North-Eastern Federal University, or the Urgel Art Gallery.
Through this meeting, 12 artists from France, Brazil, Portugal and Venezuela will engage in dialogue and build bridges with local artists, so as to exchange views on artistic processes and directly face a curious and enlightened audience, which has a keen appreciation for art and culture.
The biennale will revolve around the theme of water, a key element of the region which is home to more 700 000 lakes and as many rivers, such as the Lena, one of the largest rivers of the Russian Federation, and the true heart of the region. The three-dimensional approach of the water element – solid, liquid and gas – shall give free rein to the artists’ imagination. Water is incidentally closely linked to climate change the effects of which can particularly been experienced in this part of the world so close to the North Pole and the Arctic.
The geopolitical context including Asia, the Arctic and the vast region of Russia will also provide a scenario to the event by emphasizing the specific features of local and guest artists.
Flying over Siberia on our way to Asia on several occasions had led us to wonder about the local populations that live in these latitudes (62°10’N - 129°50’E). Now is the chance to meet the Eveny, Evenks,Yukaghir, Dolgans or the Yakuts who live there in harmony with their environment.
The thousand-year routes, the epics of great civilisations such as the Scythes’s (VII-III bc), the prowess of Genghis Khan, all come to our minds again, and still permeate the achievements of the artists who are hosting us.
In this era of globalised contemporary art events, when art has become a powerful driving force for society, thanks to artists deeply committed to societal, environmental, governance, gender or planetary solidarity issues, the city of Yakutsk has called upon artists and invited us to an artist-in-residence program in the cradle of mankind, to “live the experience”.
