Les organisations de défense des droits de l'homme soussignées expriment leur entière solidarité avec l'universitaire et chercheur français François Burgat, membre du Comité consultatif d'Alkarama, contre les tentatives de le réduire au silence en le poursuivant pour des accusations forgées de toutes pièces visant à le faire taire pour avoir défendu le droit à l'existence du peuple palestinien et le rejet du génocide dont il est victime.
Le chercheur doit comparaître devant la justice française le 24 avril 2025 pour « apologie du terrorisme », suite à la publication de déclarations où il a exprimé sa position humanitaire et politique concernant l'offensive en cours contre Gaza. L’un des chefs d’accusation est la republication d’un extrait de l’un de ses ouvrages, paru en 2016, qualifié par le ministère public de “long panégyrique du Hamas”.
Ce procès fait suite à une plainte déposée par l'Organisation juive européenne, une association française qui, sous couvert de combat “contre l'antisémitisme, l'antisionisme et le mouvement de boycott, de désinvestissement et de sanctions (BDS)” lutte en réalité contre toute voix critique à l'égard des politiques extrémistes du gouvernement israélien.
Nous considérons ce procès comme une menace grave pour la liberté d'opinion et d'expression, une tentative de criminaliser la solidarité avec le peuple palestinien et de faire taire les voix libres qui défendent la justice et les droits de l'homme face aux crimes commis contre les civils dans les territoires occupés.
François Burgat est l'une de ces voix intellectuelles et académiques impartiales qui se consacrent à la compréhension du monde arabe. Il a toujours défendu la dignité humaine, la justice, la liberté des peuples et le rejet de la tyrannie. Il a toujours été l'une des rares voix académiques occidentales à avoir eu le courage de critiquer l'Occident et sa vision coloniale et arrogante du monde islamique, ce qui a fait de lui la cible de campagnes systématiques de désinformation et de persécution.

- Condamnent fermement cette persécution judiciaire et la considèrent comme un recul par rapport au socle de principes sur lesquels repose la République française et aux obligations du gouvernement français en matière de droits de l'homme, conformément au droit international.
- Rejettent les tentatives visant à étouffer la liberté d'expression et à criminaliser la sympathie pour les victimes de l'occupation israélienne en Palestine occupée.
- Invitent les autorités françaises à honorer leurs obligations internationales en matière de droits de l'homme, en particulier en ce qui concerne la liberté d'opinion et d'expression.
- Déclarent leur entière solidarité avec le chercheur universitaire et penseur François Burgat, et appellent à une large campagne internationale de solidarité avec lui.

Joint statement in solidarity with French researcher François Burgat
in the face of attempts to silence in Europe voices for Palestinian rights
The undersigned human rights organisations express their full solidarity with the prominent French academic and researcher François Burgat, a member of Alkarama's Advisory Committee, against attempts to silence him by prosecuting him on trumped up charges for defending the right of the Palestinian people to exist and for rejecting the genocide they are being subjected to.
The researcher is due to appear before the French courts on 24 April 2025 on charges of “apology for terrorism” following the publication of statements in which he expressed his humanitarian and political position on the current offensive against Gaza. One of the charges is the republication of an excerpt from one of his books published in 2016, described by the prosecutor as “a long panegyric of Hamas”.
The trial follows a complaint filed by the European Jewish Organization, a French association that, under the guise of fighting “anti-Semitism, anti-Zionism and the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement”, is in fact fighting against any voice critical of the Israeli government's extremist policies.
We consider this trial to be a serious threat to freedom of opinion and expression, an attempt to criminalise solidarity with the Palestinian people and to silence free voices defending justice and human rights in the face of crimes against civilians in the Occupied Territories.
François Burgat is one of the impartial intellectual and academic voices dedicated to understanding the Arab world and has always been a champion of human dignity, justice, the freedom of peoples and the rejection of tyranny. He has always been one of the few Western academic voices who dared to criticise the West and its colonial and arrogant view of the Islamic world, which has made him the target of systematic campaigns of disinformation and persecution.
The undersigned organisations:
- Strongly condemn this judicial persecution and consider it a retreat from the principles on which the French Republic is founded and the French government's obligations under international human rights law.
- Reject attempts to stifle freedom of expression and to criminalise sympathy for the victims of the Israeli occupation in occupied Palestine.
- Call on the French authorities to respect their international human rights obligations, in particular the right to freedom of opinion and expression.
- Declare its full solidarity with the academic researcher and thinker François Burgat, and call for the widest international campaign of solidarity with him.
