While governments across the world are intensifying their efforts to contrast the spreading of COVID 19, some criminals are taking advantage of the situation perpetuating predatory crimes.

From cybercrimes to frauds, while law enforcements attention is focused on mantaining and enforcing social distancing measures,.criminal organisations are attacking some of the main actors of the resistance against this Pandemic .

As reported by Europol, while the number of cyberattacks against both organisations and individuals is increasing. with hospitals, universities and social security institutions targeted as never before, it seems like these hackers have no limits.

Also frauds’ number is on the rise, and what they all have in common is apparently the state of need and necessity generated by the Pandemic. Like the transfer of € 6.6 million by a company to another one located in Singapore, in order to purchase alchools gels and FFP3/2 masks. But these goods were never received.

Also common are property crimes. The most famous scam is the one involving the impersonation of representatives of public authorities.

In different EU member states government officials reported a similar scam in which criminals gain access to private homes pretending to be medical staff and providing material or hygiene products or conducting a “Corona test”.

Another scam strictly connected with pandemic emergency is trafficking counterfeit medicines.

Pandemic has created favourable economic conditions for criminals specialising in trafficking in counterfeit medicines. All over the world police authorities seized 34.000 of surgical masks, making it the most popular product and at the same time the most counterfeit. There are more than 2000 internet sites identified by the police directly linked to the sale of products related to COVID 19 virus.

Thanks to this Pandemic popular drugs like antimalarial chloroquine or Vitamin C, known for its immune boosting properties, together with other drugs, are widely counterfeit.

The result is that those people in real need because poor or defenseless, are the most targeted. (cm)
