The Fire Department said the helicopter crash landed on the top of the tower, which isn't far from Rockefeller Center and Times Square.
A New York City Police Department source said that the helicopter crash-landed on the roof but did not go into the building. The weather was foggy and rainy at the time.
The crash near Times Square and Trump Tower shook the 229-meter AXA Equitable building, sparked a fire, and forced office workers to flee on elevators and down stairs, witnesses and officials said.
No one else was injured in the crash, which officials said appeared to be an accident — not an act of terrorism. The crash sparked a two-alarm fire at the building.
An Agusta A109E helicopter with one person on board crashed into the building, which is 1750 feet high, at about 1:45 p.m., the FAA said in a statement :
"FAA air traffic controllers did not handle the flight," "The NTSB will be in charge of the investigation and will determine probable cause of the accident."
"FDNY members are operating on scene at 787 7th Ave in Manhattan, helicopter crash landing," the FDNY tweeted. "The fire has been extinguished. There is currently one fatality reported."
