Britanny Hill, 24, who was shot to death while holding her baby is being called a hero after she protected the child from being hurt.
"She is a hero," said Ja'Mal Green, a community activist who went to high school with Hill. "She loved her kids. . .She made sure her daughter was safe."
The young Mother was talking with two acquaintances outside a car in the 1200 block of North Mason Avenue while holding her one-year-old daughter, Chicago police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office said.
Two males drove up in a silver Chevy Impala, got out of the car and shot Hill in the upper body about 8:50 a.m., authorities said.
Hill was hit on the right side but was able to take cover behind a car and place her body over the baby, according to Chicago police spokeswoman Michelle Tannehill. “She shielded the baby from the gunfire."
No one else was injured in the shooting and someone then drove Hill to a nearby hospital where she was pronounced dead about 9:25 a.m.
Police say they have good surveillance images from cameras on the block. They have recovered the offender's vehicle, but no arrests have been made.
