The Myanmar Project: Streets of protest (1)

Since the military coup on Feb 1st, hundreds of thousands of people have taken the streets to express their anger at the electoral steal and their wish of a federal democracy governed by civilians. These pictures are the fieldwork of recent graduates in journalism who are now covering the protests from all around the country. In the first series, two days in Thandwe (Rakhine State) & Yangon.

    The three-finger salute is a symbol of resistance in the movie Hunger Games and has been adopted by Thai protesters last year as a sign of defiance against the military junta which took power in 2014 in a coup. Neighbouring Myanmar protesters have in turn chosen to rally behind it.

    Thandwe, Rakhine State. Aung San Suu Kyi, secretary general and leader of the NLD is under house arrest like most of her party's MP since Monday when the army raided the opposition at dawn, on the day the new Parliament should have been sworn in.

    Protesters parted peacefully at the end of the march while agreeing to meet on the next mornings until the restoration of a civil government. Police violence occurred in other cities such as Mandalay and in the capital Nay Pyi Taw.

    A protester holds a sign full of hashtags. With the increasing connectivity in Myanmar, Twitter has seen many new users from the country joining the app in the recent days in an attempt to amplify the voices in the streets.

    Dozens of thousands of people on foot or bike protested every day in Yangon and most of the cities in Myanmar despite the emergency state and barricades put up on main avenues.

    09/02/2021 - More people turned up the next day in Thandwe, Rakhine State to protest against the overthrow of the civil government. A man holds a sign in Burmese: "May Mother Suu be healthy". ASSK, 75, is still under house arrest, as during the 1990's. People walk along a string to protect the march against traffic.

    Millions of people have joined the Civil Disobedience Movement (CDM), which includes a general strike initiated by doctors in Mandalay from February 3rd. Justice for Myanmar is also a collective researching the business interests of the military junta.

    A man bangs a pot to protest against MAL's coup. Every evening at 8 PM, Myanmar citizens have gathered on their balconies and doorsteps to bang loudly on their pots and pans, a traditional way to chase evil.
